How to turn your temp gig into a long term role!

Posted By: DCL Recruitment   Date: September 2024

Salary or work-life balance: which matters more in your industry?
In recent years on-going temporary roles are becoming much more common and ultimately can serve as a route to gaining full time employment.

Temporary placements offer benefits for both employees and employers – employees gain an insight into the organisation’s culture before committing permanently, being on the inside when roles become available as well as being able to show case skills and ability firsthand.  Employers can adjust their staffing for seasonal highs and lows, can assess if the temp fits with their team and companies culture and ultimately evaluate the need for a permanent on going position.

If you are in a temp role or are thinking about accepting one - the following points outline various strategies to excel and to turn your temp gig into a long-term career role:

Show Commitment and Reliability

Committed and reliable employees stand out to Employers!

So, what exactly is the best way to display yours?

Follow procedures and deliver high-quality work consistently meeting deadlines

If appropriate, offer to take on extra responsibility, and do so successfully

Highlight your Skills

Focus on making a strong impression from day one by taking your temporary role seriously!

Take on tasks enthusiastically and professionally, completing them to the best of your ability. Volunteer for additional tasks that align with your strengths and the company’s needs and always keep your eyes open for opportunities to learn.

Demonstrate your ability to Learn

A great way to turn that temporary role into a permanent job is to demonstrate your ability to learn and adapt.  Learn new systems and processes as quickly as you can.  While being trained write down directives and processes that you will need to use.  This assists with remembering and gives you something to refer to as you move to independently undertake the role.

Build relationships

In any job, temporary or permanent, it’s a good idea to build positive relationships.

Do your best to get on well with your colleagues and manager, offering a positive and friendly approach.

Let your manager know you are seeking a permanent position

Make sure your supervisor/manager and HR at your company know that you are keen and excited to be part of the team going forward.  That way if a role comes up you will be the first person they will think of.
